Job Description: Background: Western Area Power Administration’s statutory mission is to market and deliver cost-based hydroelectric power and related services. Western’s service area covers 1.3 million square miles. Western’s wholesale power customers provide service to millions of consumers in 15 western states. Western operates and maintains 17,033 miles of transmission lines, 300 substations and other related facilities. This position will provide Power Marketing Project Management services to the Sierra Nevada Region (SNR) of Western in Folsom, CA.
GIS Specialist shall perform the following work primarily for Western’s Sierra Nevada Region (SNR), but include support for Western’s Headquarters (HQ) and any of Western’s other off-site locations and other local entities.
General responsibilities include:
• Maintenance and updates to the SNR GIS Program Maintenance Manual and implement GIS program changes identified in the GIS O&M procedures manual.
• Provide onsite support in maintaining the GIS system and conducting verification of the GIS data. This effort shall include upkeep of the GIS inventory, GIS standards, and GIS procedures. Assist in the review of SNR’s LIDAR and Photogrammetric data and software.
• Provide support in developing and supplying maps and other GIS information. Update and maintain the SNR Map Gallery and develop recommendations to consolidate, streamline, and manage the Map Gallery.
• Directly assist in the implementation and long term maintenance of GIS centered Transmission Line Inspection Software. Assist in testing, troubleshooting, and assist with TAMIS data migration issues.
• Assist in the development of new GIS schema and datasets as it relates to the development of Western-wide T-line inspection software. Assist in coordinating data requirements, standardization and implementation with other regions and CSO as it relates to the development and ongoing maintenance of the Western-wide T-line inspection software.
• Collect infrastructure data: towers, T-lines, access roads, sensitive environmental sites, and other project information; data to be spatially accurate per regional standards and collecting methods.
Minimum of 1 year experience working with all ESRI’s ArcGIS software products, field data collection, and Trimble Pathfinder Office or other GPS collection software with post-processing capabilities and knowledge of California’s geography; i.e., terrain, flora and fauna. All field GPS data will be collected with appropriate GPS hardware equipment capable of capturing “mapping-grade” or better spatial accuracy. Contractor will be utilizing a data dictionary provided by Western.
B.A./B.S. degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Cartography, or other related field
Candidate must be computer literate, and familiar with MS Office Suite.
